This music was composed with the image of beautiful angel voice from the universe. Originally, the music was composed for the World Design Expo in 1989, when Hiro was in charge of the Music Executive Producer. The sound is consisted from 16 channels, which leads the sound effect of angel’s voice  through the tunnel where guests were entering the venue. This has been arranged for mandolin orchestra with C major, using only 7 sounds without using any ♯ or ♭, so that it is friendly to everyone. Please enjoy holy sounds of the angel.

Firstly, Hiro was asked to write music for this poem by one of Shinmin Sakamura’s fans, and this was how Hiro met Shinmin. It was a fateful encounter, and as soon as Hiro read the poem a melody came out instantly from the bottom of his heart. Hiro wishes to let more people know Shinmin Sakamura’s belief and rearranged it for Mandolin orchestra.

Wish! and Dreams come True (005)

This is based on the poem “Where There’s a Will, There’s Way” written by Japanese famous “prayer poet”, Shinmin Sakamura. It was offered by by a one of Shinmin Sakamura’s fans to create a music for this poem. Hiro had an attachment to this poem, because his mom used to recite the poem when she had a hard time, then it become his magical wards for him to encourage him self “Wish! and dream comes true”. Hiro wishes to let more people know Shinmin Sakamura’s belief and recomposed for Mandolin orchestra.

This short piece is adapted from the “Andante part” of Pastoral Fantasy, originally for a large mandolin orchestra. This is written with a simplified technique so that small ensembles can enjoy it. There is no fugue in this music, and the melody is smooth and cosy. This work is also arranged for piano solo, mandolin solo & piano, and for flute & piano.

The main melody of this work is based on the opera ”A song of paper making”, which is composed by Hiro Fujikake.

Merchen No.2 (031) 18 min. This was the first mandolin work for Hiro Fujikake and debuted by a mandolin orchestra “Plettro Romantic” in Nagoya, Japan. The music is based on a Japanese fairy tale “Pink Giraffe” written by Eriko Nakagawa.Based on the story, Hiro was asked to compose a musical for children by “YAMAHA”. It was first performed by Nagoya citizen’s orchestra, directed by Hiro Fujikake in Nagoya civic hall. The original version was performed with children’s chorus, narration and orchestra. Hiro selected 4 numbers from the musical and arranged for mandolin orchestra, titled “Merchen No.1”. “Merchen No.2” is consists of 5 numbers from the lest of the musical.
Serenade No.1  (032)
26 min. There were many numbers of folk songs in Tokuyama village, Gifu, where used to be surrounded by mountains and greenery however it eventually sank under the dam. These were movements that tried to preserve the beautiful senaries by filming or making TV programs. Hiro was in charge of those music. “Serenade No.1” is based on one of those, Hiro arranged for mandolin orchestra. This music is consisted of a melody of folk songs as well as a image of great scene of countryside. The music was asked by the mandolin orchestra of Kyushu University in 1979 and first performed by them.

During the process of the reconstruction of the music, the image and scene was not the key consern, but individual melodies are the center of the work. It’s been reborn as a mandolin orchestra. Since the variation of motif has been uniformed in this music, you can enjoy harmonised sound although there is no accurate or detailed formation like symphonic orchestra.

Viva!Mandolin(Add Percussion in 2015)(036B)Year 1994 is the year of 100 years anniversary since mandolins were introduced to Japan. It’s been commission by Mr. Hisao Ito, chairman from Japan Mandolin Union and first performed by Gifu Mandolin Orchestra. In order to celebrate this anniversary, Hiro wanted to respect its roots where mainline came from, and tried to show gratitude in this music, so that he titled it “Viva! Mandolin” before composing. In this music, Hiro tried to deliver the full potential of its characteristic which are picking and tremolo method. He wishes that players can feel the soul of mandolin and create heart feeling sounds with all in one.
STABAT MATER  (037)

This music was commission by the mandolin orchestra of Mission school. The meaning of “Stabat mater” is referring to Our Lady of Sorrows, which portrays her suffering as Jesus Christ’s mother during his crucifixion. It’s been set to music by many Western composers. The challenge in this music was trying to create seraphic harmony to express love from heaven, rather than focusing on the grief of the lady. In this music, Hiro tried to deliver the most beautiful harmony of the mandolin orchestra with chorus, organa and glockenspiel.For Chorus
It’s been consisted of three-part chorus, so that the menders of orchestra are able to sing during their performance. The special score for a choir is not included in this package, however a sheet music for the three-part chorus is included in the part.

11 min.This music was originally composed for ”National Cultural Festival/Japanese Music” in Gifu-prefecture, Japan in 1999. It was a music for total 100 players of Japanese traditional instruments such as Koto(Japanese harp), a shakuhachi (a vertical bamboo flute), shamisen(Japanese guitar), 17-string Koto, and first performed at the festival and directed by Hiro Fujikake. Firstly, the title of “Green-scope” came up in his mind and the word brought him an imagination of beautiful mountains and reflection of greenery on a river surface. Once his image of the music was settled, the lest of creation went smoothly. The performance was received highly reputation and requested to rewrite for mandolin orchestra. The sound is exotic and dramatically showing excitement in a melody line, which bring audience in an Asian fantasy world.

Using a melody line of the song, Hiro forced on to bring in a mood of celebration in the music. It’s been rewritten for mandolin orchestra.
Fuji-Musume Full Blooming  (040)
7 min.Hiro was asked to collaborate with famous classical Japanese dace titled “Fuji-Musume(wisteria maiden)” and composed new music for the stage.  When Hiro looked over a score of Nagauta music(Japanese traditional singing), he was eager to change it from the original. However considering the dancer, it was quite important to keep the same tempo and duration from the original, so that he carefully studied to maintain that part and created a totally new music. The stage was successful with the same choreography sequence from the original along with new melody line. The music was originally for “solo orchestra” then rewrote for mandolin orchestra.

Ballade 2nd suit (042) 18 min.With requests, rewrote these suites without songs. You can play as a suite or select any music. This was the first music worked with Masaji Chujyo, a poet. We selected 8 ballads from his collection of poems, titled ” Bottoms of pavement”. Each poem has fairy tale stories and that lead us to the wonderland. Hiro attracted by the stories and enjoyed composing it.

Songs can be omitted.This was originally commissioned by Matsuzaka Commercial High School in Mie prefecture, Japan. 150 players belong to the guitar club, and they are specialized in playing guitars and singing at the some time. This music has been consisted with chorus of three parts. The lyrics are also written by Hiro. It’ was first performed at Marine Day which is a holiday established in 1996 as Japan’s 14th national holiday and a day for appreciating the benefits of the sea and wishing for the prosperity of Japan. It’s been written for mandolin orchestra and it’s been completely original for mandolins.

The original music was composed for the poem called “Hakumei(Twilight)” by Michizō Tachihara. The inspiration of this music comes from the morning fresh light with wishing for the world peace. The original was composed for Duet, and then Quartet. It’s been arranged for Mandolin orchestra. This music was born from the project called “Mandolin chamber music in Tokyo” in 1999. Hiro composed a new piece for a group which presented the best performance in the festival. 
This music is inspired by the image of spring with beautiful greenery and new born life. 4 songs were selected  from 1 hour half musical, “BUN-NA” which was originally written by Tsutomu Minakami, then rewrote for a mandolin and a guitar. The title ” Spring Sprung” comes from the image of the spring and expresses the splendor of living.

This music is a dramatic arrangement of “Recuerdos de la Alhambra” composed by Francisco Tarrega,  one of the masterpiece for guitar music. This was composed when Hiro performed synthesizer with Kiyoshi Shōmura, guitarist. The image of passionate Spanish flamenco, a sound of a church bell and a beautiful silhouette of Alhambra Palace are the perfect match for the sounds of mandolin orchestra.

Pastoral Fantasy (066)

The most well performed piece.

It was the second work Hiro composed for mandolin orchestra. The work was composed in June and July of 1975 and was first performed by the Tokai Student Mandolin Association in August. The inspiration for this music came from the fresh greenery of early summer. The title “Pastoral Fantasy” suggests the idea of pastoral scenery, an image evoked by the theme of the music. The form of the music is as follows:

  1. Introduction of pastoral theme, andante
  2. Fugal section, free development
  3. Recap of the touching pastoral theme
  4. Powerful coda

However, rather than interpreting the music according to a pre-defined theme, listeners are invited to listen and appreciate freely. It would be great pleasure for the composer if this music means something to those who play or listen to it.

Muse Concerto (068) 
11min. It was commissioned by the mandolin orchestra from Meiji University in 1995. Using the style of concerto, it’s been written as a modern harmony with original sense of rhyme. “Muse” indicates the inspirational goddesses of poetry, art and music in ancient Greek culture, it would be a perfect word to describe the uniqueness fo this music, so it’s been titled “Muse Concerto”. Hiro didn’t satisfy with the original version of orchestration, he totally rewrote it and turned it into a new music in 2005.
Star Concerto (069)

The inspiration of this music came from infinite shining stars in the sky. The idea stared with the world “Abendmusiken”, German for “evening music”. Thinking of the delicate sounds of mandolin, the image of twinkling stars naturally depicted the medley line. Hiro wanted to revive the style of baroque music, grand concerto to the present, with simply pursuing the beautiful harmony itself. This is he titled ” Star Concerto” The main melody line has been cited from the musical ” A tale of little world”.

Tre-Pick Prelude (071)
11 min. This music was composed for the Jeunesses Musicales Mandolin Orchestra and first performed at NHK hall in 1990, conducted by Naozumi Yamamoto. The mission of this music was make the best use of mandolin’s functionality as well as potentiality. ” Tre-Pick” is a made-up word by Hiro in order to benefit from the “tremolo” and “picking” which are uniqueness of mandolin. Originally, it was composed with 6 parts of mandolin ensemble that effective enough to perform,  however there was a request to add a part of percussions for the first performance. 
Grand Chaconne (072)
10 min.This music was originally based on “Chaconne” which won the 1st prize in Sasagawa Competition in 1976. It was published from Nippon Music Foundation. It’s been rewritten to make the length almost double and made a spectacular excitement to lead out the potential of the mandolin orchestra. “Chaconne” is a type of musical composition, popular in the baroque era. The theme of a music is constantly changing and progressing. It was commissioned and first performed by mandolin orchestra of Kobe University in 1981.

14 min.This was composed and first performed by Gifu University as a regular concerts from spring to summer in 1999. The inspiration of this music was based on the great scenery of mountains and rivers, where Hiro used to live near by. Water and Greenery are essential for our living and Hiro made a wish in this music that we need to sustain blessings of nature forever. The expression of his ideas are depicted in each movements.

The original work was for chorus of 229 members and solo orchestra at special stage of “Future Expo in 1988. The theme of the music was for “Usuzumi cherry blossoms” which lives more than 1,500 years and designated as a national  natural treasure. The lyric was written by Masaji Chujyo, a poet. The original music was played many times and it was rewritten for mandolin orchestra for the 15th anniversary of Gifu City Mandolin Orchestra. The overall structure as well as details were totally recomposed for mandolin orchestra. There are two versions, one with chorus, the other is without chorus.

Aqua Rhythm – Mandolin Orchestra (077)

It was commissioned and first performed by mandolin orchestra from Hiroshima Shudo University at the 35th annual concert on 4th December, 1999. 

This music is inspired by various kinds of sounds from water stream, such as spring water, a mountain stream, murmuring, waterfall, river, and so on. These sounds always create different rhythms that amuse people. There are many expressions on water in Japan ,and Hiro likes a phrase that  “The flowing river never stops and yet the water never stays the same.”. The sounds of water reminds the greatness of the nature as well as our own existence. This music is based on his imagination over the various forms of water.

The music is consisted of two movements.
1st Mov.; Allegro / 5 beats
2nd Mov. Adagio / the theme is frequently changing

Hiro hopes this music will be loved by many people and played all over the world with wishing blessings of water will sustain forever.

The original music was for string orchestra with pipe organ(304), commissioned by Salamanca Hall in Japan ,where possesses a beautiful pipe organ. The original piece had long way to be performed more than 13 years from the completion of the composition.

Aqua Rhythm – plectrum Quartet (078)

It was requested by Hisao Ito, a chairman of Japan Mandolin Union to compose a new music based on “OBABA” which is a folk song in Gifu and first performed by Gifu Mandolin Orchestra. The melody and rhythm was taken apart into several motif and composed as a new music with using variation technique.

Gujo Threnody (081)
11 min. 30 sec.It was requested by Hisao Itoa, chairman of Japan Mandolin Union to compose a new music based on one of the folk song from Gujo region in Gifu, Japan and first performed by Gifu Mandolin Orchestra. The idea of the music came from “Gujo Dance” which is nationally famous. The dance and songs used to indicate a tragic history of peasants who were struggle with starvation and suppression from authorities.

Theses is no boundaries or restrictions or prejudice, we are all in one, people living in this precious land of the earth.  Melody of various folk songs in several asian countries, including Okinawa and rhythms of kechak/Kecak (music of Balinese dance) are naturally are merging in this music.
Life Beat (083)
14 min.The music includes Japanese drums, percussions and flute in order to create dynamic sounds of the orchestra. The title “Life Best” came from the idea of breathings from lives. The music is originally based on “DOKI(ancient earthen vessel)” which is the 200 people chorus music with orchestra sounds. It expresses the rhythm of ancient time with consisting of dynamic melody line.  The part of Japanese drums can be replaced other instruments.
Fantasia Kyushu (084)

It was a commissioned work for the 30th Anniversary for Fukuoka Mandolin Orchestra. The theme of this music is based on two fork songs from Kyushu- area, one is “Itsuki Lullaby” and the other is “Hietsuki-bushi (Love Song)”. With thinking outside the box, Hiro uses methods of variation as well as symphonic technique on these songs. This is the first music for a mandolin orchestra to use horn to make rich  and dynamic sounds. Clarinets and percussions are also used in this music.  Of course, these additional instruments can be omitted according to members of players. Once, there was a group which has only 14 members and tried to challenge the national competitions and achieved an excellent result. Hiro was happy to hear that news.

Rock’n March (085)
3 min. 30sec.This was originally an assigned piece for the All Japan Band Competition in 1991 (published from All Japan Band Association) and rewrote for mandolin orchestra. It was request from ARSNOVA and first performed at Casals Hall in 1999. The title of march does not refer to military style, Hiro wanted make this music excited with the rhythm like afrobeat. This is how it’s been titled.
JONGARA (086)
14 min.This music is inspired by rhythm of a Japanese traditional musical instrument of Tsugaru-shamisen. The great feature of this music is taking improvisation aspect of jazz music. The powerful sounds makes this music dramatic with cherishing traditions. The shamisen is a stringed instrument shaped like a guitar and is often called a Japanese guitar. There are a lot in common mandolin and shamisen, although they have different characteristics. Hiro took an advantage of shamisen and made it into totally modern and original music.

The Moon over the Ruined Castle Variation  (088)

It was requested by Hisao Itoa, a chairman of Japan Mandolin Union to make a new music based on the Japanese famous song of “The Moon over the Ruined Castle” by TAKI, Rentaro. It was composed and first performed by Gifu Mandolin Union in 1983. The technique of variation is used for this music in order to make more dramatic with keeping original melody. The song is included in this music, however it can be omitted.

Percussions can be omitted. The big difference from the original is the last part of the music. It finishes more dynamic with ff. Playing method as well as structure of this music have been totally revised in order to make more dramatic.

The great feather of the 1st movement is a beautiful melody line of mandolin, and in the 2nd movement, rhythmical sounds created by both mandolin and guitar, playing like percussions.
Ode for Spring (090)
20 min.This was a challenge for the mandolin orchestra and Hiro tried something new in this music, unlike any others. He adopted a technique of flexible harmony, elements of jazz which players are given discretion on some parts and introduced a recorded water sound. The inspiration of this music is from sprouts of life in the spring and admiration of the great nature. It was commissioned and first performed by Hiroshima Shudo University. The music is based on the symphony orchestra titled “A Song of Spring”.

 

Hiroshima Spirit (091)

Originally, it was wrote for solo orchestra with pan flute and mixed chorus and rewrote for mandolin orchestra. The music is based on the lyrics by the most respected person, Tomin Harada(-1999) who used to work as a surgeon in Hiroshima under tragic experience of atomic bomb attack during World WarII. It was first performed on 6th, August at Hiroshima Sea and Island Expo. Later, it was performed by Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and CD was released. It was composed to wish for peace not only for Hiroshima but also worldwide. Hiro hopes this music helps more people to realize importance of  peace for everyone living in this earth, and will never forget his treats every time he listed to this music.
Apocalypse (092)
14 min. 30sec.The word “Apocalypse” appears in the Bible, however there is no religious meaning. With the contrast of the world, the music describes the wish of world peace. It was commissioned and first performed by a mandolin orchestra from Meiji University.When there is no chorus and an organ, please use synthesizer(chorus +organ mode) to perform. The part of synthesizer is not included in the sheet music.
Nagara River Fantasy (093)

It was request from Hisao Ito, a chairman of Japan Mandolin Union to compose a music based on a famous Japanese traditional style ballad which related with Nagara river in Japan. It was quite difficult theme to tackle. He didn’t want to extract it’s melody or just arrange it, because it’s not coming from his heat, just using technique makes the music shallow. So, he changed his mind to think about fantasy of the river and it worked quite well. It was revised in 2007 and became totally new music from the original version.
Wings to Eternity (094)
5 min.The original music is for the monument of a wind-up doll, which is located in the main intersection in Ginza, Tokyo. It’s been rewritten for mandolin orchestra. The inspiration of the music comes from  history of the Silk Road and its culture. Imagination over the eternal history created a spectacular harmony in the music.

When Siegfried Behrend, a German classical guitarist and composer came in Japan, he was impressed by the sounds of Japanese traditional drums, then Hisao Ito, a chairman of Japan Mandolin Union asked Hiro to write a music for mandolin orchestra with Japanese traditional drums in 1982. The premier was in Japan, later Italian mandolin orchestra “Citta di Brescia” performed and the CD was released in 1999. This was a completely new challenge to mix with two different elements, mandolin and Japanese traditional drum. In order to encourage player’s initiative, improvisation technique is required in this music. It is a great pleasure to find vitalities of two different instruments and create aggressive sounds. The title “Chance Encounter” refer to an encounter of mandolins and Japanese traditional drums.Goh
Spectrum (099)
24 min.When the light comes through a prism, you can see a beautiful spectrum. This is the idea of this music comes from.  A beautiful harmony of mandolin orchestra is consisted with its structure, harmony and timbre. In this music Hiro tried to lead out the effective sounds of the instruments. In contrast to mandolin orchestra, a part of 4-percussions are added in this music. Improvisation is required for both a conductor and players, also there is a part with no bar lines on the sheet music, so that everyone plays freely. Those elements of sounds pile up like canon style to make harmony. Cadenza of clapping, tapping and tuning are considered as a coincidental elements of this music. The allocation of orchestra member is not  symmetry, it leads a broad range of unique sounds. It was commissioned and first performed by the mandolin orchestra from Gifu University.

The original music was from the opera called ” The Vanished Sun” which  is based on the Chinese legend. It was composed by Hiro and performance was collaborated with both Japan and China as the 30th anniversary of Japan-China Peace and Friendship Treaty. The main melody has been selected from the original opera and rewrote for mandolin orchestra. It’s been completely created a new music by using the melody of the opera to match with mandolin sounds, regardless of the story. Quartet version was composed earlier than mandolin orchestra version.

It’s been composed to take an advantage of the functions and effects of the ensemble with 4 instruments.

22 min.It was commissioned  and first performed by Mozart Mandolin Orchestra at their 20th Anniversary. This is based on the opera  “Calling from Ground”, composed by Hiro. The opera is about a human drama during the most ancient war, recorded in Japan. It was completely rewrote for mandolin orchestra to take advantage of the mandolin’s potential.The theme of the music is about the gift from the earth. Although there has been human dramas in a long history over desires and obsession with power. There have been many people who are in agony and suffering from their sadness due to wars and conflicts against their will. Hiro wanted to express an appreciation of blessing ground instead of depicting tragedy, because the ground refer to the mother fo the earth and it is necessity for human to survive in the future. Hiro believes it is our duty to pass it on the the next generations.  Wind Instruments can be omitted.

It was commissioned and first performed by Himeji Parnassus Mandolin Orchestra in June, 2010. The image of the music comes from the word “Parnassus” which is a name of sacred mountain in central Greece where Apollon and muse are believed to live there. “Sinfonia” is the Italian word for symphony and refer to agreement or concord of sound. The intention of this music was focused on beautiful harmony of mandolins to create the original sound. It’s been composed to make dramatic sounds with easy technique.

KIZUNA for Trio of mandolin flute and guitar (105)
This was commissioned and first performed by Trio group of “Ensemble Tricolor”on 19th, May, 2012. It’s been composed on the idea of making all in one through music, after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Although each one of parts are independent, they need to cooperate to make a harmony. The shape of triangle is powerful and symbolic of the bond, Hiro hopes it would be wonderful if the idea of strong connection like a triangle will expand around the whole world and connect everyone’s hearts. This is how it’s been titled KIZUNA meaning bonds.

Symphonic poem “Kai-Suimei” (106)

It was a commissioned work for the 10th anniversary of The Orchestra Phoenix in Kofu-City Yamanashi Japan and first performed on 22nd March, 2015. Hiro wrote lyric for the music. The music is based on the idea of “Suimei” which means clear water and beautiful scenery.

 

Life Symphony (107)

It was a commissioned work for the 50th anniversary of Fukuoka Mandolin orchestra and first performed on 1st November, 2015. 

Theme of the music is the based on the image, Hiro created. 

The clear blue sky in the hight 10,000 meter up. although storm on the ground. Think about the World.
Blue sky has No border···The world is one. 

The history of men started only several thousands ago, and the fight never stops between people. The life is only once and never again. The earth is only one as well. We need to pass this precious gift on to the next generations. This is Hiro’s wish, which embedded in this music.

 

Tekona Fantasy (108)

It was a commissioned work for the 40th anniversary of Lara Mandolin Club and completed on 3rd April, 2016. It was premiered by the orchestra on 28, May, 2017 at Ichikawa City Cultural Hall.  The music is based on the old story of a beautiful lady called Tekona, who killed herself by jumping in the sea because she couldn’t response to the feeling from several men who approached her. Hiro researched the story and its background to get know more about the lady. When he got stacked with the idea, he had a nightmare and realized  there was a lady in his dream. As soon as he got up from the nightmare, the melody of the music sprung up from his heart and he could finally finish it.
